Schools can open chargepoints to staff, visitors, parents or the wider public. If you charge a fee for public use, the installation must comply with the Public Chargepoint Regulations 2023 and meet the government’s commercial chargepoints minimum technical specification. If use stays free for staff, parents and visitors with no public charging fee, these extra rules don’t apply.

Each socket needs a minimum power supply of 3kW that isn’t reduced when other sockets are in use at the same time, and no more than one socket can be installed per accessible parking space. Chargepoint placement and design must also take account of the needs of disabled users. DMS checks all of this during the free site survey.

You’ll need your institution’s SEED or reference number (URN for England and Wales, an institution reference number for Northern Ireland, SEED number for Scotland), the number of chargepoints and sites you want, whether chargepoints will be open to the public, your installer’s OZEV registration details, and contact details for two people whose email addresses match your institution’s domain. Academy trusts must also name a contact at both trust and school level.

Yes. OZEV selects a proportion of installations for audit, carried out directly or through a third-party organisation, which can include an on-site visit to inspect the chargepoint and supporting equipment. Audits may happen before or after your claim is paid, and schools and installers must cooperate with any request for information.
